Minister McGinley to officially open new road at Magheragallon, Gweedore
Today will see the official opening of a new road at Magheragallon,Gweedore by Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Dinny McGinley T.D.
This scheme was co-funded by the Gweedore GAA Club and the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport under the recently established Community Involvement Scheme (CIS) and this scheme is the largest scheme in Donegal funded under the Scheme in 2013.
Paddy Gallagher of Moneybeg Planning & Engineering Ltd was hired by Gweedore GAA club to apply for planning permission for this project in 2011 and planning was successfully obtained in 2012.
This project cost €210,000, €168,000 of which was provided by the Department, with the Gweedore GAA Club contributing the remaining €42,000. Donegal County Councils Road Design team laid out the site and the Councils local Roads Service team supervised and built the project.
The length of road constructed is 400m and works included the relaying of Eircom and water mains, diverting overhead ESB cables underground, and founding a base and levels for a new road and drainage. The entire site is within a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and all work was agreed in advance with The National Parks and Wildlife Service so as to minimize the interference to the SAC habitat.
McCaffertys Contractors overlaid the new road under Donegal County Councils supervision.
Speaking before the official opening John McLaughlin, Director of Roads and Transportation with Donegal County Council described this project as “an excellent example of partnership working between the Council, the local community and the Department”.
He added that “this project is one of the largest projects funded under the Community Involvement Scheme in Donegal and I would like to pay tribute to the local community and in particular the Gweedore GAA club for the great leadership they have shown in this project and by investing substantially in a vital piece of infrastructure that will serve their community for many years to come”.
